My partner and I very much enjoyed the performance. It is obviously pretty much Christine's play but the support characters added their own dimensions and really, it was a frightening experience to find yourself caught up in the situation - it could be played in a much more terrifying way but the humour in the play and the interpretation in your production softened the darkness. But there are obviously various ways of direction which add to future possible productions. It is definitely not a one dimensional play.
The character Amy I felt left me wondering a bit. I think Carolyn Masson tended to play without a lot of levels - the first part of the play could probably be looked at a bit - when she and Christine are really setting us up for what follows. Maybe I missed something but I truly did wonder about their relationship - this did not bother my partner - but because of the major complexities of living with Christine, I rather needed a stronger reason than their past friendship - something really specific to keep them together. Why would Amy stay there and put up with it all. There obviously were major risks as the climax presented to us with Amy so violently attacked by Christine.
The rest of the cast were terrific - Elizabeth Penny's high voltage performance was very balanced, moving, insane and it is a huge role. She did an extraordinary job with a complex, multi-dimensional role. It needs to be sensitively handled and kept on many levels and she succeeded.
I loved Luke and Dean and I have to say that Luke's perfomance just bowled me right over - I could not take my eyes off him. I think it was a risky and adventurous development of the character but he succeeded. It could so easily have gone over the top and he would have lost us but I found his performance one of the most novel and ingenious that I have seen in such a long time. He surely must be interested in the Method approach to acting. I really derived much pleasure in watching everything he did.
Set was creative, atmospheric and worked well.
We both had a most enjoyable evening and we stayed up talking about it for quite some time.
You obviously have a lot of talent and I really wish you well in breaking into the professional arena. I suspect there are many closed shop attitudes but you have strong shoulders - you just have to keep knocking on that door.
Well done.
